"Beware the barrenness of a busy life." ~ Socrates

Oh, the 'To Do' list!!  Yupp, that piece of paper...or App on your whatever-tech-device-you're-using.  Reminders. Tasks.  Deliverables.  What else do we call it?  No mattter who you are, we all know you have a list.

I have been playing catch up for days now.   Somehow no matter how hard I try to get it all done, there is always a thing or two that must be added.  Oh, that list.  It.  Just. Never. Ends!

Like most people, I find that I am constantly flying around like a busy bee, surrounded by so many options, opportunities, distractions, responsibilities - you name it - the buzzing sounds never end. Does this mirror your life, too?

This month, I have a guest blogger, Kim McHugh, who might be just the gal to remind y'all that sometimes we need to walk away from the business of busy-ness.  She also talks about her make-over experience, finding joy in what you do, and more.  I urge you to take a minute away from whatever you're doing...starting now.

"I have to admit, when Effie first asked me to do a photo shoot for her blog, I was a little nervous. I wouldn’t say I’m one of those people who run away from the camera; but, I also don’t seek the spotlight either. Anyone who knows Effie, knows that my fears were completely unfounded. Not only is she the most amazing stylist, with a finely developed artist’s eye, but she also has a way of making everyone who meets her feel completely at ease, and comfortable in their own skin. Spending the day with Effie was truly like hanging out with one of my best girl friends, listening to music, drinking Starbucks, and chatting about life. Somehow, over Thai take-out and girl talk, Effie was able to transform me from the pale, freckly working mom, to a beautiful woman ready for her close up.
When I think back to the day of the makeover and photo shoot, the hardest part was finding time in my hectic schedule to be able to do it. Ironically, this is the exact reason why it was so necessary. As is the case with most modern women, my time is not my own. I spend my daytime hours teaching high school and my afternoons chauffeuring my daughter to and from Irish dance, Lego club, Mandarin, etc. By the time my husband walks through the door at the end of his own endless work day, I’m ready for my pjs. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the craziness of everyday life and forget to take time to relax, let alone spoil myself. It was such a treat to show up at Effie’s wearing yoga pants and no makeup and let her make me over from head to toe. One of Effie’s gifts is being able to translate your inner personality into your outer appearance. She made me look as vibrant on the outside as I always feel on the inside.
Working with Effie on this photo shoot and being chosen to write a post for her blog has been a wonderful experience for me. I always think of Effie and me as kindred spirits. As 40-something women, we’ve both experienced enough of life to realize how important it is to be in tune with what makes you happy, and to be confident enough to follow your passion, even if it means making sacrifices and starting from square one. Other than my family and friends, my career as a teacher is what I love most about my life. I came to teaching after doing one unfulfilling job after another. I always knew in my heart I was meant to teach and since setting foot in the classroom 13 years ago, I’ve never regretted it for a single moment. The mornings start too early and the grading can be tedious, but I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. Effie understands this aspect of my life, because she also has an inner drive that motivates her to do more and be more. She shares this philosophy of doing whatever it takes to be the best version of herself she can possibly be.
I feel sort of silly when I think about how nervous I was to do this. I’m truly flattered that Effie chose me as one of her makeovers. Every woman deserves the chance to be treated like a celebrity. I cherish the day I spent in the spotlight. As I sit typing this last sentence in my pjs, I’m thankful I have photos that portray me in a way that captures the essence of me." ~ Kim
Thanks, Kim, for spending some girl-time with me!!

Effie
